automap and cubase/halion/groove agent

As the Novation community has developed over the years, it has naturally found the bulk of it's voice on Social Media. To ensure we can be there to discuss and support you as best we can, we’ve decided to close the forum.

The conversation isn’t over, though. We’re waiting for you; come say hi.

automap and cubase/halion/groove agent

I am running cubase 8 and automap 4.9 with a 25 SL mkii.  I am able to control the basic functions of cubase, however, I am having problems controlling groove agent and Halion 5.

All of the correct windows paths are mapped, and I see the instruments in the mixer/plug-in mappings section of automap.

However, when I load halion 5, or groove agent 4, I am unable to control anything!

When I have the cubase track set to "any midi in", the keys on the mkii actually control the sounds on both halion and the groove agent.

However, when I set the midi setting to "automap", all functionality is lost.

I know this is a NOOB question, and probably user error, but, can anyone please help?

Thanks!

Best of luck. I've been watching videos and experimenting for 2 hours, trying to get cubase to learn novation, and vice versa. Gettting nowhere whatsoever. Lots of information out there about how to do stuff that's already set up, or to do exotic things. In the world of documentation, it seems there are guides designed to reduce fear (but not inform), and there are guides for PhD's. Nothing in the middle.

I want to do things like run quick controls using the pan pots on Novation, or map aftertouch to volume increase. I did once succeed in getting pitch bend out of aftertouch using the input transformer. And I discovered that the patch called "Romantic String Pad Note Exp" is responsive to aftertouch (volume increase ["expression"] happens in that case). When it comes to aftertouch, Halion seems to be the main issue. I only have SE at the moment. Maybe full Halion will change the picture.

The problem of getting any control over instrument sound from the keyboard remains a complete mystery to me at this point. (Not interested in altering effects. I mean to alter the synth parameters.) I don't even know about the wrapping of plug-ins. Is there a secret tutorial on how to ordinary things?

If I solve any of these problems I'll let you know. I'll see what I can get out of the tech support people at both novation and steinberg. I've only had this for 3 days. Maybe I'm an idiot. Please let me know if you discover anything that works to connect Halion controls to Slmkii controls.

I have solved the problem. Posted it in the Steinberg forum.  After it's approved, I think it should appear here

http://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=30510

The gist of it is that you have to include your HALion VSTs in the "Setup VST Paths" part of the Autoserver's software setup tab. Then you must let automap scan the newly added folders, and edit the mapping. You'll know you have the correct path in your list if Halion appears in the list shown on the mixer/plug-in mappings tab.

Selecting Halion Sonic from that list, you can then edit the mapping. But before you do that, choose the correct instrument on the Novation keyboard by hitting inst, and selecting what looks to be halion from the choices displayed on Novation's LCD menu. When you edit the mapping (via the automap server), it shows a picture of the Novation. Now you click the control you want to assign, then choose the halion equivalent from a droplist in the grey area at the bottom of the mapping dialog window.
