Is automap dead?

As the Novation community has developed over the years, it has naturally found the bulk of it's voice on Social Media. To ensure we can be there to discuss and support you as best we can, we’ve decided to close the forum.

The conversation isn’t over, though. We’re waiting for you; come say hi.

Who knows?! There's plenty of sharks in the water now doing their own equivalents of Automap (akai/nektar etc.) , and the Pro tools lock out may have thrown Novation in to working out new technologies.  I don't like having to wrap my plugins i must admit, so i would prefer it if Novation were working on something new as i feel that Automap is near to running it's course now.

If it was to fade away, it would probably take a good 3-4 years before your gear was unusable though, surely?  Maybe even longer.... So i wouldn't get rid of what you have based on lack of updates... Unless you have issues there's no need for updates anyway, and it seems that Automap still supports the majority of the DAW's.

So, after a one year absence Taylor has returned to announce AAX support/development is dead.  The post notes "We've also had a good deal of discussion about the 'wrapping' mechanism in general. Over time and via customer feedback we have observed that this way of working is not really what the majority of people want. It tends to cause session incompatibility, can result in crashing plugins sometimes and has created a huge maintenance burden with the sheer number of plugins out there."

This doesn't suggest an exciting future for Automap.  Yet I've recently received a novation email (13 May) proudly stating: "It doesn't matter how long ago you bought your product from us. If you ever need a helping hand, you can always make a quick call to our friendly support team. They're really helpful. In fact, they just won the Pro-Tools Expert award for Customer Service!  Alternatively, you can trawl the online forums and hope you find somebody who happens to know as much as our experts. Whichever you choose, we've got your back. For life."

Novation is still marketing Automap products. Caveat Emptor I guess.

What can they honestly do tho?  Most serious musicians/studios tend to get a build they're happy with and stick with it for many years, heck most that i know still sit on snow leopard as their main OSX choice.  We could be years away from a true successor, and then put another couple of years on that until the bugs are ironed out if they are going to be as daring as they were with Automap.

If you bought an automap equipped device today, you could use it for another 4-5 years quite happily, never update a single component in your system and you could use it for 10+ years if wanted.

As for the statement they put out in that email, it is probably as much about cementing their beleifs as it is to make you feel secure as a Novation customer, it's a pillar of promise which their staff can fall back to when dealing with problems.  I do like that bold approach.

Also - I think it's a very good move for Novation to slowly give up automap (if that's where they're heading), i've sold my SL now and am on to something else as my 'larger' controller keybed, the whole wrapping of plugins has really become a bugbear of mine over the years, going to multiple systems and not being able to load projects AND started seeing a few of my prefered plugins become unstable when wrapped, just had enough of it.  The SL is still a great controller, but i needed a change to see what else is out there.

Very interested in the coming years to see the SL's successor, and it's related technology.   I think Ableton have snapped that stray guy up from Native Kontrol, but he has a great idea of what users want in a controller, although it's confined to Ableton specifics - people like him having an input wouldn't be a bad thing though.

Are there any reliable downloads for Automap? I can't find my Pro3 disk and deleted it from my laptop and cannot get a download from the Novation site that isn't corrupted. Any thoughts on what to do? I hate to buy another controller at this point.

Hi KMac537,

Sorry to hear about the issues downloading from the Novation webiste, including the latest version of Automap (4.9). If your downloads are being corrupted, please check/disable any antivirus software, malware protection, etc. that may be active and attempt the download again. It would also be worth attempting the download on another internet browser to see if the same issue occurs. Here is a link to the Automap downloads page:

Same issue here. I've tried downloading earlier versions of Automap and using a different computer and different browersers. Same result. Attempting to install on Windows 10, which Novation claims is supported.

Automap 4.9 work on Windows 10 64 bit for me here--- Some few VSTis don't work, like Tyrell 6 (VST3 though)
