Keys not working on Impulse 49

Hi there,

I've had the keyboard for less than 6 monts. Now the keys don't work in Live or Reaper, on my desktop or laptop. I've tried a factory reset, and this did not help.

To be clear, all encorders, buttons wheels etc work fine, and the pads also work. It is just all the keyboard keys which do not.

Anyone have any ideas?

Not sure if DaveOnions will ever return, but I'm wondering if this problem was ever resolved?  I have the same issue.  It happened awhile ago and I did contact customer support, but they were unable to help me at all.

-=Edit=-

I should add that I'm using Pro Tools 10 on an iMac running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), AutoMap is 4.7, and the firmware is v670.  Also that the drum pads, knobs and faders all work fine.  The LCD display however is very sluggish to respond, not only in making a change but also while changing.  Here's a link to a video I made to show the customer service rep that was trying to help me.

Also, when examining the setup in the Audi MIDI Setup utility, there are two ports listed under the info tab: Impulse and Port 2.  Perhaps there's some kind of conflict there?  All I know is that when pushing the "Test Setup" button in the Audio MIDI Setup window, the drum pads trigger a response while the keys do not.

I just had this problem. All you have to do is install the firmware. Search "impulse firmware" from the main Novation page. Follow the link "What to do if Impulse firmware update fails" you'll be taken to a page that explains the process. It's not fun, but it is simple, and most importantly it works. Support was very helpful I might add. To be clear none of my keys worked but everything else worked perfectly and this solved the problem instantly.

I had installed firmware v670 found on the "What to do if a firmware update fails" page.  I'm now installing the beta v682 found here:

http://beta.novationmusic.com/releases/impulse/

Funny enough, my troubles all began with a firmware update... I think it was v653 or something.  After that, my keyboard didn't work anymore.  It also started identifying as Impulse 49 1, Impulse 49 2, etc.

-=Update=-

As expected, no change.

Everything went screwy when I updated AutoMap and the firmware for my Impulse 49.  Even after downgrading to the previous versions everything was still screwed up.

When you had your problem, did your display lag?

The case number is 145412.  At the time I was speaking with the tech support agent I was asked to try using MIDI Monitor to see what signals were going through.  I don't remember what was going on at the time, but apparently I was very busy and unable to spend time trying to fix the Impulse.  Today I downloaded and tested things with MIDI monitor.  Here's the result:

Also, I'd forgotten that my display stopped working at one point.  It now is as it was in the youtube video I made, linked here:

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Well, I took the impulse in to a repair shop about a month ago (Kukje MIDI / all4sound.com) and after speaking with their tech yesterday he informed me that the motherboard was faulty.  Apparently they've ordered the replacement part and are awaiting its arrival.  The problem was diagnosed when they switched my motherboard with another unit's and everything worked fine.  He also mentioned this was not an uncommon occurrence for these types of all-in-one keyboards, not just novation.  food for thought.

Same problem! Drumpads and Faders work. Midi-Monitor shows that no MIDI signal events through the keys occur. Factory-Reset and Firmware update didn't solve the problem. I bought the Impulse 25 13 months ago, this is very unfortunate!

Hello,

I just received my Impulse back from Novation, I had to send it off to get fixed because the top row of lights didn't work. Now the problem I'm having is: My keys will not work with Pro Tools they work fine with Logic Pro 9. Can somebody tell me how to fix this problem.

Thank You,

Albert

I have IMPULSE 61, everythink work fine until I install Automap and automap make upgrade. Now Everythink work fine except keyboard.

Now when I make firmware upgrade to older version using sysex librarian keyboard working until USB was disconnected. I make again uprade using sysex librarian to last version and again all works fine until USB disconected.

I am really upset because before I really proud using novation products ( i have supernova II and  x-station 49) , now I have something not usable and is no solution to fix it.

This is 100% firmware issue.

I recently acquired a used Impulse 49 on e-bay. It has no keyboard going through to my iMac running Logic Pro X (latest version) and no LCD except on the boot menu.

If you press the "+" and "-" keys simultaneously, the drum pad lights start firing in a rotation, around and around. No help on the screen at all. No templates.

The faders and rotary knobs seem to be passing MIDI signals and a few sounds come through on the pads.

Note: the Impulse does show up properly named in the Mac OS X MIDI Diagnostic. I am hoping this means the motherboard is not borked.

My next steps are to install midi monitor and view the signal flow. I will reinstall the firmware update, which came down the first time I hooked it up and ran Automap.

New to this kind of device. I previously had a simple Casio keyboard running.

[Based on the tests I performed, I think this is a hardware issue. I will contact the Novation support folks.]
