*SOLVED* Unstable behaviour

With firmware 670 I had a very unstable setup. Sometimes the Impulse would suddenly stop communicating during playing.

Also communication with Cubase 6.5 was very unstable. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't...

First thing I did was getting rid of Automap 4 and only installed USB Audio Driver 2.5. I programmed a Generic Remote and got it

functioning the way I wanted, BUT... still unstable performance. Sometimes the Impulse just wasn't reacting anymore...

Then I updated the firmware with the 682 beta version and now everything works PERFECT. No more communication loss, etc.

My Impulse is now a worthy MIDI controller and solid as a rock! Thank you Novation for this update!

I guess I was too fast with my post... Close, but no cigar... After I start up my pc, the Impulse is visible in the device manager, but the actual MIDI connections are not visible inside an instrument... This happens randomly, so not always. I have to unplug my Impulse and restart it to make it function. Anybody has an idea?

Now I use the class compliant MIDI driver from Windows. No Novation software or drivers on this machine anymore...

Let's see if this works...

Hmmm, seems stable... Only little issue I have is a few missing MIDI notes when I play the keyboard for the first time inside a synth after I start up the Impulse.
I keep my fingers crossed...

I did some extensive tetsing and now my Impulse is working flawlessly (except the little start up problem I described earlier).
B.t.w., I am using Windows 7 X64, am I the only one who has trouble with the drivers from Novation?

No problems here with Win8 x64, except when I plug my impulse in the USB 3.0 port of my laptop - then the keyboard hangs up after I play some notes with the sustain pedal pressed.

No problems at all with 2.0 ports though.

:( Unstable again, sometimes the Impulse just stops sending MIDI data...

I will contact support, maybe they have an idea...

Maybe it's a power issue? Did some searching on the net and found a guy who had the same issue going on. He solved it by connecting the Impulse via a powered USB hub.
I have one here so that's the next step...

Yep, 3 days in a row of stable performance. My conclusion is that my Asus P7P55 LX mainboard has a bit trouble delivering the power the Impulse needs.

I have exactly the same problem, tested on two different devices. It just stops sending midi notes after a while and I have to reconnect the device. So am I supposed to buy a powered usb hub? How does that look like?

Wow you posted a year after the previous post, that's spooky!

Have you tried testing going straight in to your computer's usb ports? That should provide sufficient power, try that first to rule out other issues.

If it works, and you're currently going through an unpowered hub then it's recommended to buy one that has a power adapter connection so that additional power is available to the usb devices connected, something like the D-Link DUB-H7 works well in my experience.

But please note, this only applies if you're currently using a usb hub.  If you are going direct to your computer's usb port then it could be a different issue (such as a faulty cable/motherboard compatibility etc.)

Well, I am not using a hub currently. I am using one right from a motherboard.

Strangely enough, it did not happen, when I connected it to a MAC.

It is not a faulty cable, because I brought them to a shop and used another one from a different novation controller and it did not help. I used the other controller and it did work. However, it was just impulse 25. But the seller told me, that the CPU is the same, so it should not matter and if 25 is working, 61 should too. But it does not.

I used it on my toshiba laptop and on my PC with asus motherboard. Sometimes, the connection stays for very long. It might be half an hour. At the moment it stops working almost each minute I replug it.

Well, as it works on a mac with same cabling etc. may suggest the standard windows 'class compliant' driver is playing up, did both windows machines have the same operating system? if so, what was it? (Win xp/7/8  32/64 bit?)

It is windows 8.1 x64. Can I do something about it?

I will have to try it with the mac one more time, when the guy with it returns home again, because I tested it for maybe 10 minutes.

I currently borrowed a notebook with win 7. Completely different hardware. Installed automap 4.8 and newest ableton. It worked for quite a long while, almost fell for it, but it failed. The same way. Tried it again and it failed again. So it is not related to windows 8.1, not related to ableton (failed with reaper too), not related to cable (tried a different cable and tried this cable with a novation 25 controller). The only last thing I did not try is to go from a power hub, even though I did connect it always directly and to 3 different machines. Is there something else where the problem could be? Should I try to install automap 4.7 instead of 4.8? Or could the controller be faulty?

I would advise speaking with Novation via their technical support before trying different versions of automap etc.

Technical support is successfully ignoring me. So there is nothing else I can do?

edit: they actually wrote me an email. I will continue further investigation with them. (and I was pretty impatient... they actually answered pretty fast)

They will sort you out, they're very good once you get in conversation with them. Good luck!

I have solved the problem of freezing MIDI with a USB hub with external power and now works perfect. ;)
