LaunchKey Mk2 49 and InControl + Ableton Live

Hi,

So, I've bought a LaunchKey MK2. I've got everything connected correctly..And everything works - Nearly..

However...

1) The transport controls only work at seemingly random times.

If I turn InControl OFF for the transport controls, I can then play and stop correctly - so MIDI messages are being sent for the keys (So the fault isn't hardware related)

However, with InControl ON, only Play and Record is recognised (Stop and Loop do nothing)

2) The "Scene Start" and "Scene Stop" buttons also only work at random times..

"Scene start" sometimes starts a scene, or restarts it. But most of the time it does nothing.

"Scene stop" stops playing clips of a scene most of the time, but can take a number of presses for it to light up on the keyboard / stop the scene.

3) Scene select buttons work...But..

But they become far less responsive when there's something playing (or when audio is being processed... So, if I stop the track and there's delay/reverb still sounding, the buttons are still unresponsive for a time)

However, if I disable InControl, the scene select buttons work perfectly, no matter how many clips are playing...

I've tried different USB ports on my MacBook Pro. But this makes no difference. I'm using Ableton Standard 9.2

It seems to get worse when there's things playing.. I can stop/start scenes more often when there's less clips playing (I'm taking 1 clip out of a possible 5...So I'm not going crazy..CPU is only hitting 11% max)

(I've edited this post as I keep finding more issues..)

Now I've discovered that if I pause ableton (press space), things are still unresponsive. So, there's green arrows next to the paused clips, but no audio.

Only when I properly stop everything (click on a scene that contains no clips) do the scene select buttons become responsive again..

Oh, and the Novation MK2 website doesn't have links to the VStation or BassStation. And it doesn't have the DAW setup guide either...

For those who couldn't find them, take a look in the MK1 page instead...

I'm guessing (hoping) that this issue with InControl (Oh, the Irony) is something that can be fixed in a software patch of some description. But, any ideas are welcome!

Cheers

J

Hi Jay,

Sorry to hear about the issues when using the Launchkey MkII with Ableton, but we are more than happy to help. I recommend contacting us through the following link so a we may look into the cause and address the issues you are experiencing.

http://global.novationmusic.com/answerbase/contact

The Launchkey MkII does have it's own Support and Downloads page without needing to refer to the original Launchkey material. The Bass Station and V-Station plug-ins are seperate products and have their own page. From the dropdown menu of the downloads page, you can access all the material associated with the Launchkey MkII, Bass Station and V-Station.

I'm having all the same issues with the Launchkey 49 Mk2 I received 3 days ago. Just trying to learn Live, and the InControl clip launching integration is the main reason I bought this thing.

For me, the Scene Stop button (round one at the end of the bottom row of pads) is probably the least reliable, so if I want to stop a whole scene I pretty much always have to resort to the mouse/trackpad.

I realize it works best for you if folks go through the support contact form, but it might also be good to post some standard troubleshooting steps on here. I imagine that since I came here and found someone listing the exact same issues, this won't be the last you'll see of this problem.

Hi

just to follow up on this:

After some brilliant support via telephone, it turned out to be a faulty unit (Drum pad PCB)

Its been fixed now and works perfectly.

Shame it was faulty in the first place, but great support and communication throughout made this as painless as it could have been!

Oh good to know. I've had some email support with troubleshooting tips I wouldn't have necessarily done on my own, but a few config changes and a firmware update later, I still have unreliable Scene Start/Stop/Select keys. Perhaps there was a bad batch of these PCBs. Hopefully they can work this out soon.

For what it's worth, they decided this warrants a hardware replacement on my end. So if you're seeing the symptoms described here, just contact tech support. They may recommend some other troubleshooting steps, but unless there's a newer firmware out there than the one I found, they probably will move along to replacement soon enough.

I'm just glad I've read this post, I received my mk2 49 3 days ago and the control dropouts have been driving me nuts, I'd convinced myself it was a USB issue, but clearly it's not.

Well, I just sent mine away and got it back in a process that took about 2 weeks, only to discover the replacement has the exact same issue. And an older firmware version than the hardware I sent in!

I noticed the Live 9.2.1 release came out (and didn't get installed automatically on my Mac) while it was gone, so I decided to update that. And then a bit more googling and checking this thread showed me that there's a newer firmware. Of course if this was correctable via software, I'm going to be cranky about the fact that I had to go without my controller for 2 weeks, besides packing and driving it to the shipper. I guess I'll just console myself by pretending to believe that doing some diagnostics on my hardware helped them solve the problem.

Update: it works! Trying not to be too grumpy about the fact that I didn't need to send it away and that they never applied the firmware to this unit. ¯\_()_/¯

Thank god I ran into this thread, I was experiencing the same exact issue. Bought my launchkey yesterday and was about to return it this very morning, but the firmware update worked like a charm.

I feel bad for customers who weren't quite as fortunate as me and had to jump through numerous hoops to have their issue solved.

This thread should be stickied or addressed in a more prominent manner.

Also, novation needs better Q/A, shipping something that is advertised to work with ableton out of the box, with a sloppy firmware, is ridiculous. I would have returned my launchkey and never bought another novation product again had I not ran into this thread by dumb luck.
