Remote SL Compact "Unknown Device"

Hello,

I've had a remote sl compact 49 for 5 years now. It has worked fine from then. But last month, when I switched it on, windows stated that the keyboard was an "unknown device".

I've contact support (case 252114) but didn't have much help to this day.

Since then, I change my PC to get a new one running W7 pro 64 (instead of XP 32bits). The problem remains on the new PC.

The keyboard lights up when switched on. I can scroll all the menus, save presets, globals etc. just like it performs well. Via MIDI sockets, I can upgrade or downgrade the OS. Now, the OS is up to date. I can also send templates ans modify them on the unit.

But, it won't work via USB port. I've tried other cables : no change. I've even change the USB socket (as I saw some user did have that issue) : NO change.

It's a pretty weird issue here and very frustating as the remote seems to work fine.

So if someone has another suggestion, feel free to write them. I'm about to give up. Really a shame as I really like this keyboard. Less buttons compared to the SL MK2 (with all the LEDs) but this is why I prefer the remote compact.

thanks for any kind of help.

Ed.

The PC which is now Win 7 - Is that the same PC hardware that was running XP?  If so, you may need a motherboard bios update - Check the manufacturer of your motherboard and see if one is available.

If it's different hardware then it would suggest your SL is the culprit - I've never had one, so not sure on this - But is it possible to factory reset them do you know?  Check manual etc if you have it?

The fact that it's turning on gives a bit of hope.

Hello,

no the PC is a new PC, with new hardware. I've tried the SL on two other computers and it did the same thing. So It is pretty obvious the SL is the culprit.

It's not possible to reset it. You can only upgrade or downgrade the OS via USB or MIDI ports.

Yes, the SL has all his fonctionnality except it won't communicate via USB. Well, having changed USB cable and USB plugs did nothing.

And it is so tiny on the board. Components are so small. All these new electronics are sh* if you want to troubleshout them.

Now I have a SL in like-new condition but unpluggable via usb.

Working on old amps is another story... ;)

Hah! Modern engineering, A bit like modern cars, it's great when you break down, flip the bonnet and are presented with a nice Black plastic box with the car manufacturers logo in your face! I generally just flick the screwdriver around on something that looks metallic, get back in the car and tell the missus that we best call breakdown as it's a job for a professional.  My manhood stays intact then! ;)

Anyway the SL - is it still able to power from the USB port?  I mean, is it possible that power could be the issue here if you're running it from a PSU?  Have you tried USB Powered only, and AC Powered to see if it responds any different?

Hello,

yes the remote can power via USB. It works fine but it can't communicate via USB.

I can still use it with MIDI ports, although I don't have the autompa features available. I can play notes (hey playing music that's great, I can play music with a Novation Keyboard! I can also spend pure evenings trying to make it work :) )

I also tried to power it with a PSU. But as soon as I connect it to the PC, Windows tells it can't recognize the device.

thanks!

New to midi devices, but assume you have the additional virtual midi ports installed in windows and available to select in the daw application ?

I have an older version of automap 4.3 which should have older drivers but unsure on x64 support as using 32 bit.

Hello,

I've been using my remote compact with MIDI cable since yesterday... don't know why but I went to Novation site to see if there was an upgrade.

Automap 4.8 was released last month. So I installed it. And W7 recognized it!!! don't know why, maybe the new driver.

It works fine with Sonar but automap behaves strangely with Ableton Live. Sometimes it works fine. If I close Live and then reload it, the remote is ultra slow to respond.

Yet it invites me to select a device in Live to edit it. So it communicates with Live. But, no values appears under the names of the parameter. If I turn a knob, the value appears 5 seconds later...

The problem is that I don't know why it can work. And sometimes not.

If anybody encountered this issue...

thanks,

Hello,

I've made another install of automap. I followed again the steps to configure Live. Then it works again. BUT, I turned off my PC and then turned it on again, opened a new project in Live and... it wasn't working anymore!

So each time I do the install, it is OK since I reboot the PC.

So weird again... Automap is the key to headaches!

Hello,

Good news : I've finally managed to make Automap work. I 've never had problem of admin rights with W7 but the issue comes from this. I reinstalled automap with admin rights then I modified all the parameters for automap.exe in order to launch it as admin for all users possible. Then I started Live and it works! So if any users has this issue... it worked for me.
I have 2 questions :
_ using Ableton Live template, "mutes", "records" and "solo" work but led assigned to the buttons don't light up. It's not a drama but this fonction would be usefull. I've checked internet and seen on your site that we should be aware of the midi parameters in Live (ie enable remote fonction to midi out port of the remote) for this (midi feedback). I've checked the boxes as it is shown but it doesn't work for me. Is there a way to solve this?

_about automap functionalities:
considering 2 midi tracks with one vst automaped in each of them. How do I switch from one instrument to the other only with the remote SL compact? If I press B4 button, I choose INST then the display shows the two instruments but we can't select the instrument via the remote, altought it is possible with the automap panel on the screen of the PC. Is it normal?

thanks,
