Da Funk lead 1

Here's my MiniNova doing the lead sound from Da Funk by Daft Punk. Simple enough patch. There are videos on YouTube showing how to program this sound, but none are perfect. (The original might have been a sample hence the envelope timing differences) Mine's OK. Can you beat or improve it?

Wow! Loving your stuff on there! What are you using as a sampler on all the big beat tracks?

Thanks, Ski! I use Ableton Live. I have built up a library of samples over the years. I drag them into session arrangement view and tweak from there.

I have a Boss Sp-505 hardware sampler too, for emergency use only. (And the Tape Delay effect.)

I'm a big lover of The Avalanches so when i heard your stuff it brought a massive smile to my face, it's music i've always loved but never tried to produce as i generally produce all my sounds so don't have a large sample library.  But oh man, your stuff was awesome, really inspirational for me.

I left Ableton, and moved to Logic Studio (Mainly because got offered it for a crazy price, and because of the huge amount of traditional instruments you get with it), but since owning the Mininova i've moved on to Reaper as it sounds so nice when processing Audio, and doesn't spike the CPU like Logic (So annoying).

However, i've lost all the sampling power i had built in to Logic and Ableton so was looking at getting Kontakt, that was why i asked.

So you're taking them straight in to the timeline and processing it from there? Does that mean all the stuttering/muting etc. is done via automation?  The reason i left Ableton was the inability to store the automation into a clip!

Or do you actually trim the waveform to stutter it?

Really curious :)

I just watched the video for Frontier Psychiatrist, love it!

Arrangement view is where I spend my time. I prefer being able to work in a linear timeline. Cliplaunching is fine for DJ sets, but for production it is not enough.

To do those stuttering cuts, I'm zoomed in tight and hand-drawing little square-wavey automation lines that control the volume. Or I might have a loop going, then make a copy of the loop that has a 1-beat loop point, and drop that over the original (or replace the original). Sometimes I use Ableton's Repeater effect, which is fun.

A lot of mouseclicks go into my tracks, there's just no good way around it!

Someday, I'll make a pure original electronic track with my own sounds.

Cool, that's really interesting to hear you talk about Ableton in that way as i've always found the Arrangement view to be the weakest part of it, yet Session view to be really powerful.

I have never thought about using it in a linear fashion before.  I am going to play tonight!

Keep up the good work!
